My grandmother’s funeral was a day of mixed emotions. I stood there, next to the open casket, and I couldn’t believe that she was no longer with us. Katerina, my beloved grandmother, had always been the pillar in my life, the rock on which I had built everything.
But as I approached the coffin, I noticed something that shocked me – my mother, Victoria, had secretly placed something inside the coffin, something that I initially failed to recognize. It was a moment of turmoil that made my heart beat faster.
Why would she put something inside the coffin? For years, my relationship with my mother and grandmother had been cold and full of unresolved issues. And yet, today my mother seemed calm, as if she had nothing to hide.
But that little movement, with the quick glance she cast around to avoid being noticed, made me doubt everything. As the guests began to leave and the room emptied, I decided to investigate. It was late and I was alone in the funeral home.
The place still smelled of flowers and perfume as I approached the coffin again, careful not to attract anyone’s attention. My heart was pounding, as I had the feeling that something important was about to be revealed.
I looked one last time at my grandmother’s face, her familiar and calm gaze. Her beadwork was neatly arranged above her dress and her silver hair shone in the dim light. But as I leaned a little closer, I noticed something hidden under her wrist. It was a small package, wrapped in paper.
With trembling hands, I took it and opened it carefully. Inside I found several letters, all with my mother’s name on them. The handwriting was unmistakable: it was my grandmother’s. Each letter revealed the relationship that, in recent years, had come to an end.

The first letter was old, yellowed with age, and full of emotion: “Victoria, I have been watching you for the past few years and I can no longer ignore it. You lie, cheat, and destroy yourself. I have tried to help you, but you have failed me time and time again.
You are playing with things you cannot bear, and it breaks my heart. But I will not allow it anymore. You do not deserve my love, at least not in the way you think. I can no longer trust you and I do not know how to move forward. You are so far away from me that I can no longer help you.
Mom,” It was a powerful blow. I could not imagine that my mother had ever had this side. These letters revealed all the disappointments my grandmother had experienced in recent years. The last letter was the harshest:
“Victoria, You destroyed the family. Your choices torment me, and I’m sorry I never said those things. I loved you, but you broke my heart. I can no longer trust you, nor hope that you will be the daughter I always wanted.
I left my fortune and my house to you, because I always believed in the good in you. But now I know you don’t appreciate it. I leave it all to Emerald – she is the only one who showed me what true love is. I hope you find peace someday, even if you don’t understand it now.
Mom,” I sat there, shocked by my grandmother’s words. It was clear that she had made the decision to say goodbye to my mother, and what she had left me was more than just inherited possessions. It was a final message, a plea for a better life – something I had never imagined.
I felt weighed down by this secret and didn’t know how to handle it. Should I tell my mother about the letters? Or was it better to keep it to myself and keep the peace? But what my grandmother had left me wasn’t just a legacy. It was a warning.
