My name is Lena, I’m 31 years old and I work as a designer for a growing company. My parents constantly pressured me to find the “perfect” man, creating an atmosphere of constant anxiety about the “should” of marriage.
I wasn’t against the idea of a relationship, but the thought of getting married just to please others deeply frustrated me. “Lena, now is the time to think about your future,” my mother told me, her voice filled with concern. “You don’t want to spend your life alone, do you?”
I tried to change the subject, but the more I tried, the more they pressured me. “Lena, we just want you to be happy.” But to me, those words sounded more like a threat than a care.
After a heated discussion with my parents, I decided to do something bold and unexpected. I needed a solution that would satisfy them and end the pressure, without sacrificing my freedom. And then, as if by magic, the solution presented itself to me on the street.
It was a hazy afternoon when I left the office and noticed a man sitting on a wet sidewalk. His clothes were silently soaking wet, and his exhaustion was evident. He asked me for a few pennies, but something in his eyes moved me deeply.
“Excuse me,” I said hesitantly, but with a strong sense of decision. “Could you do me a favor?” He looked at me, confused. “A favor?” “Yes,” I said, feeling an incredible urge. “Could you marry me?” He looked at me as if I had gone crazy. “Marry me?”
“Yes,” I continued boldly, “but this isn’t a real marriage. I need someone to appease my parents. It’s going to be a temporary arrangement, a game. If you agree to pretend we’re a couple for a few months, I’ll offer you a house, an income, and a chance at a better life.
What are you saying?” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, her mouth hanging open. Maybe I looked crazy too. But the idea of taking control of my life and showing my parents that they couldn’t force me into anything was simply irresistible. “Do you really mean it?” “Absolutely.”
“Okay,” she said after a silence filled with uncertainty. “Why not?” “Seriously?” “Yes, but on the condition that I don’t get into trouble.” “I agree.” And so the incredible thing began! I knew that all of this sounded completely absurd.
But within a few weeks, Tobias, as he was called, was no longer just a “means” for me to carry out my plan. He was friendly, funny, and had a magical ability to connect with people.
Over time, I began to understand that there was much more between us than simple compromises. The moment that everything changed came when we decided to meet my parents. They were stunned! Exactly what they wanted, but in a way they didn’t expect.
I played my role flawlessly and assured them that I had finally made the “best choice.” “You really did it, Lena,” my father said with a tone of surprise in his voice. “But if you’re happy…” “Of course I am,” I replied, although I knew I was only telling half the truth.
The weeks passed, and it was amazing how quickly I began to enjoy Tobias’s company. We shared more and more moments together, even though we continued to play the fake relationship game. But at some point, I began to see him in a different light.
I realized how much I appreciated him, how much he made me laugh, and how he showed me that life had so much more to offer. And then, one night, as we were sitting comfortably on the couch, he looked at me and asked the most subversive question: «Lena, have you ever thought about what we’re really doing?»
I looked at him, surprised. «What do you mean?» «I mean,» he said seriously, his eyes burning with fire, «our marriage has always been a game, but what if I told you I fell in love?» I couldn’t believe my ears. Did he mean it? “Tobias, what are you saying?” “I mean it,” he said passionately.
“At first, it was just an aside. But now, I realized that to me you are so much more.” I was speechless. The man I had originally made a deal with had now truly fallen in love!
And then, as he pulled a ring out of his pocket and asked me if I wanted to be his wife, I realized that nothing would ever be the same again. I had satisfied my parents, but more importantly: I had found someone I wanted to share my life with—and I never imagined it would be him.
