It all started with a crumpled piece of paper, containing a small amount of money, and ended with a relationship that would change my life forever – a relationship that shook me deeply, more than I could have ever imagined. I had no idea that this flight would become the turning point for my life.
It was a regular flight back from Paris, to visit my family in Athens – one of many I had taken in recent years. Just another typical flight, nothing special. I just wanted to sit down, organize my things and relax a little before takeoff.
But as soon as I got on the plane and took my seat by the window, I noticed a man sitting next to me. He was young, in his thirties, and he seemed stressed. At first I didn’t pay attention, until I saw him looking around with intense concern, as if he was looking for something or someone.
When the plane took off, the man took a small piece of paper from his pocket and placed it on the table in front of me, without saying a word. I was stunned for a moment, but I decided to read it. The note read:
“If you are reading this message, my son, Alex, is sitting next to you. He has autism and is very sensitive to noise and changes in his environment. Please be patient with him. Here I am leaving you 20 euros for your patience and my number, if you need anything.”

My surprise was immense. The note was like a hidden hint, full of trust and fear. I looked at Alex, who was still staring out the window, but now he seemed more detached from the world around him.
The amount of 20 euros on the note seemed insignificant compared to the trust he had shown me. I decided to contact his mother, as she had asked me to. I took out my cell phone and sent her a message: “Good evening, I’m Dimitris and I’m sitting next to Alex.
He’s fine, but I wanted to let you know that I’m here if he needs anything.” The answer came immediately: “Thank you very much, Dimitris. Alex is going through a difficult time, but I know he’s safe with you. Please tell him I’m thinking of him.”
These words calmed me down, but also increased my responsibility to take better care of the child. I looked at Alex, who had now lowered his gaze, and I felt something begin to change inside him. I began to speak to him calmly and relaxed. “Your mom says she’s thinking of you and that everything is fine.”
Alex looked at me for a moment and the tension on his face seemed to ease. I began to ask him questions to keep him occupied and make him feel more comfortable. “What’s your favorite movie?” I asked him, and he began to talk to me about the characters in his favorite cartoon.
I decided to order something for him to eat, as his mother had requested. I suggested that we order together. I gave him a snack and a soft drink, saying, “I got this for you, in case you’re hungry.” I expected him to say no, but he took it hesitantly and said, “Thank you.”
It was the first time he had spoken to me. A small victory, but it meant a lot to me. The rest of the flight was filled with calm conversations and lots of questions from Alex about the plane and the places we were flying over.

Soon, he started asking me about my travels and my favorite places. The whole atmosphere around us had changed, and I felt like I was helping him calm down. As the plane approached its destination, Alex seemed much calmer.
He told me about his favorite computer games and his excitement about the trip to Athens. When we arrived at our destination, he asked if I could accompany him to find his mother. “Of course,” I told him. “Let’s go together.”
Walking through the crowded airport, I saw him spot his mother in the arrivals hall. As soon as she saw her, her face lit up and she ran to him, hugging him as if she had never seen him before. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she told me with tears in her eyes.
“You can’t imagine how much this meant to me.” I smiled and replied, “It was a pleasure.” As we were leaving the airport, Eleni suggested we go for a coffee to thank me. “That would be great,” I said.
That meeting, that experience, changed us forever. Two years later, Alex, the child who was afraid of traveling, was now my adopted son. Eleni, his mother, often laughs as she tells the story of how it all started with a note and a few euros.
And so, a seemingly ordinary flight, with a small act of kindness, changed our lives forever.
