My Husband Got Engaged to the CEO and I Took Everything Back

Roma felt that this Valentine’s Day would finally allow her to make an old dream come true. In her hands, she carried a carefully prepared surprise for Daniel: a bouquet of bright red tulips and two first-class airline tickets to Paris.

For years, they had talked about the day they would finally stroll through the streets of the French capital together, sip coffee at a small sidewalk café, and leave behind all the hardships they had endured over the years.

Daniel had always told her:

“One day I’ll take you to Paris, and you’ll finally forget all the difficult negotiations, the sleepless nights, and every struggle we’ve been through.”

That was why Roma decided that this time she would take the first step. She had no idea that while she was preparing one of the most beautiful moments of their shared future, Daniel had already been writing an entirely different story behind her back.

When she stepped onto the forty-second floor of the Whitmore & Vale building, she first assumed that some kind of special celebration had been organized.

The hallway was filled with people.

Champagne glasses sparkled on the tables.

Silver balloons floated beneath the ceiling.

Across the sleek glass wall, a giant banner read:

“CONGRATULATIONS, DANIEL & VIVIENNE!”

She froze for a moment.

Her heart had not yet accepted what her eyes had already seen.

Then she spotted Daniel.

He was wearing the navy-blue suit they had chosen together.

Standing beside him was Vivienne Shaw, the company’s newly appointed CEO, dressed elegantly in white. One of her hands rested against Daniel’s chest as though it naturally belonged there.

Then, without warning, Daniel leaned forward and kissed her.

It was not a friendly gesture.

It was not an innocent moment.

It was a slow, intimate kiss that left no doubt in anyone’s mind.

The people around them applauded.

They laughed.

They celebrated.

Then Daniel lifted Vivienne’s left hand, where a large diamond ring glittered beneath the office lights.

Smiling, Vivienne announced:

“I said yes.”

Someone in the crowd shouted:

“What a perfect couple!”

Daniel smiled as though he had conquered the world.

Roma, however, stood only a few feet away.

In one hand she held the trip to Paris.

In the other, the tulips.

She was holding the promise of a future that, she suddenly realized, had already disappeared.

When Daniel finally noticed her, the confident smile vanished from his face.

Vivienne followed his gaze.

There was no guilt on her face.

Only calculation.

The applause gradually faded.

The laughter stopped.

The entire floor fell into complete silence.

“Roma…” Daniel said.

Hearing her name in his voice felt strangely unfamiliar.

Almost foreign.

Roma looked first at the ring, then into Daniel’s eyes.

“Congratulations.”

Daniel turned pale.

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

She answered quietly.

“It looks exactly like what it is. My husband has just proposed to another woman inside the company that I built.”

No one dared to speak.

Vivienne lifted her chin slightly.

“Perhaps this conversation should take place in private.”

Roma looked directly at her.

Her voice remained perfectly calm.

“You’re the ones who chose an audience.”

She walked to the reception desk, placed the tulips down, took out her phone, and canceled the Paris trip while Daniel watched.

A moment later, both of their phones vibrated.

Roma received confirmation that their joint financial accounts had been frozen.

Then another message arrived from her attorney.

Withdrawal request filed. Effective immediately.

Her eighty-three-percent ownership stake in Whitmore & Vale—worth hundreds of millions of dollars—could no longer be used as collateral for Daniel’s decisions.

From the other side of the room, the chief financial officer shouted in disbelief:

“What happened to our operating reserve?”

Daniel immediately realized that everything had changed.

He hurried toward her.

“Roma, wait!”

But she stepped into the elevator.

She never looked back.

By the time she arrived at her penthouse apartment, more than a hundred missed calls were waiting on her phone.

A short while later, the doorbell rang.

Through the security camera she saw Daniel standing outside. His tie was loosened, his hair was disheveled, and he looked as though he had desperately been trying to pull himself together.

Vivienne stood behind him.

She was still wearing the engagement ring.

And somehow that hurt Roma more than anything else.

Not the kiss.

Not the celebration.

But the fact that Vivienne still wore that ring as though nothing had happened.

Daniel pressed the doorbell.

“Roma, open the door. We need to talk.”

She switched on the intercom.

“You have three minutes.”

Daniel stared at the camera in disbelief.

“Three minutes? I’m your husband.”

“Legally, perhaps. But emotionally, you gave up that title the moment you got engaged to someone else in front of two hundred people.”

Vivienne stepped closer.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I understand this is painful, but your reaction has created a serious corporate crisis.”

Roma gave her a bitter smile.

“My reaction?”

Daniel could no longer deny the truth.

The company was in danger because he had used Roma’s ownership stake for his own purposes.

He claimed it had been a strategic decision.

Roma answered with only one sentence.

“Strategy does not mean taking what doesn’t belong to you.”

That was when the entire truth came to light.

Daniel and Vivienne had been preparing a corporate fraud scheme. They had used company shares without authorization, diverted funds through related businesses, and tens of millions of dollars had disappeared through contracts connected to Vivienne’s family.

At the emergency board meeting, Roma arrived with every piece of evidence.

Not with anger.

Not with revenge.

But with absolute composure.

She was the one who had built the company years earlier from a small rented office. She had protected it during financial crises, negotiated with investors, and worked countless sleepless nights to turn it into a success.

Daniel had once proudly told her:

“My wife is building an empire.”

Now she realized that while saying those words, he had been searching for weak points in its walls.

Eventually, Daniel began begging.

He admitted he had made a terrible mistake.

He insisted he had never truly loved Vivienne.

He confessed that he had always feared living in Roma’s shadow.

But Roma understood the truth perfectly.

He had never been afraid of losing her.

He had been afraid of losing the money.

The power.

The comfortable life.

And the name behind which he had hidden for years.

“You were very convincing,” she said quietly.

The board removed Daniel from every position within the company, and Roma immediately filed for divorce.

In an effort to save herself, Vivienne eventually turned over evidence to the investigators. She provided emails, text messages, and voice recordings that exposed Daniel’s entire plan.

Months later, the company had recovered.

Daniel had lost his influence.

His marriage.

And everything he had tried to gain through someone else’s work.

Roma finally traveled to Paris.

Alone.

But this time, she no longer felt as though she had lost something.

Standing beside the Seine, she realized that Paris had never been Daniel’s gift.

The journey had always belonged to her.

To the woman who had built her own life with her own strength.

Who had survived betrayal.

Who had found herself again.

And as she walked across the bridge, for the first time in years she no longer felt abandoned.

She felt free.
