“I asked my son’s girlfriend to contribute to rent—he shocked me: ‘No, Mom… she’s pregnant.’”

Family Stories

I’ve been really overwhelmed by this and I can’t stop replaying it in my mind. I feel like I’m stuck in a loop, and I’m not sure whether I handled the situation correctly.

I have been raising my son alone since he was five years old. He is now 22, and recently his girlfriend, Mia, has been staying at our home almost full-time. At first, I tried to be patient and understanding — I didn’t want to seem strict or controlling, and I didn’t want any tension in the house.

But over time, reality started to feel more and more overwhelming: the bills kept increasing — food, utilities, everything… and I increasingly felt less like a mother and more like I was running a small “guesthouse.”

Eventually, I set a boundary:
“If she wants to live here, she needs to contribute to the household.”

My son looked at me as if I had said something completely shocking, and then quietly replied:
“Mom… didn’t you know? She’s pregnant. So that’s your responsibility too now.”

In that moment, I completely froze. Mia had been hiding the pregnancy the whole time. It wasn’t even the news itself that shocked me most, but the silence — and the way my son spoke as if it automatically meant all responsibility would fall on me.

I confronted them. I told them it wasn’t fair to just dump such a huge responsibility on me without any prior discussion. I also asked my son how they planned to handle things financially, since he is the father.

But he became defensive. He said I was being too strict, that he needed support right now, and that he had to focus on preparing for the baby.

That’s when I firmly set a boundary: either Mia contributes to the household, or she cannot stay in our home. I didn’t want to punish them — I just didn’t want everything to quietly fall on me alone.

Now my son is angry and disappointed, saying I’m making their lives harder. And suddenly I feel like I’m the “bad one” in my own home.

And now I’m left wondering: should I have been gentler? Or is it completely reasonable to set boundaries when two adults are living in my house and trying to place more and more responsibility on me — especially with a baby on the way?
