Sometimes my tomato plants delight me with strong, thick stems, while other times they stretch into thin threads and wilt at the slightest touch of air.
The soil looks good, I water on time, but the result is not at all what I expected. What could be causing this difference?
Recently, the stems of my plants became thicker than my finger in just a week!
The plants look like new tree trunks: sturdy, with dark green leaves, and their root system is simply amazing!
And the most amazing thing is that I don’t use expensive fertilizers or “chemicals”. I achieve all this with materials that most others throw away.
Want to know my secret? Keep reading and I’ll tell you exactly what I feed my plants to grow at an incredible speed!
If your plants are thin, stretched, and have weak stems, it almost always means that one of the important factors is missing:
– Lack of light – plants stretch to reach the light.
– Too hot – plants grow upwards, but forget to build up their thickness.
– Weak root system – nutrients don’t reach the plant and growth stops.
But there’s one critical mistake that almost all gardeners make. I did it once too.
I’ll tell you what it is, but first let’s talk about how to feed plants properly to get strong, tight stems.
My “secret” fertilizer is an extract of common food scraps that others throw away. Here’s what you need:
– Banana peels
– Mandarin peels
– 1 liter of water
I cut the peels into small pieces, put them in water and let them soak for a few days. Then, I drain them, dilute them with water in a ratio of 1:2 and water the plants from the root.

But most importantly, I add a teaspoon of sugar to the mixture. Why?
Sugar is not just sweet. In fact, it acts as an accelerator:
– It activates beneficial microorganisms in the soil that help the roots absorb nutrients.
– It provides an immediate boost of energy for growth, making the plants grow more in width than in height.
Bananas are rich in potassium and phosphorus, which strengthen the roots and stems. Mandarin peels contain phytoncides, natural protection against mold and fungi.
And as I mentioned earlier, sugar stimulates metabolism and improves the absorption of useful substances.
After 7 days of this fertilizing, my tomatoes are almost unrecognizable!
Now let’s talk about a big mistake! When plants start to stretch, many people start to overwater them.
But this only makes the situation worse! Too much water weakens the roots and the plants become even weaker.
What I do:
– After transplanting, I don’t water for a few days – the roots are looking for water and getting stronger.
– I only water when the soil has dried out to a depth of 2-3 cm.
– I always use warm water – cold water only does harm.
– I fertilize every 7-10 days.
I use the extract every other week. You can water it directly at the roots or spray it on the leaves – the nutrients are absorbed faster that way.
The first results are visible after a week: the stems become thicker, the leaves darken, and the roots become stronger and healthier.
Yes, you read that right! After fertilizing, I touch the plants with my hand or create a slight draft.
Plants perceive it as wind and «learn» to strengthen their stems. This method is often used in greenhouses – and it is very effective!
Try it, and already in 7 days your plants will be the envy of your neighbors. Share your experience in the comments – does this fertilizer work for you?
