This is how the devastating tsunami struck after the 8.8 earthquake – the coasts were destroyed!
Dramatic moments unfolded in the Pacific Ocean region when, in the early morning of July 30, 2025, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake shook the eastern coast of Russia, especially the Kamchatka and Sakhalin regions. The earthquake triggered a huge tsunami that changed the lives of thousands of people in an instant.
Earthquake of the century: “We have never seen anything like it”
The epicenter of the earthquake was near the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and the earthquake was followed within minutes by a tsunami – not only in Russia, but also in northern Japan, Alaska, Hawaii and the west coast of the United States.
“Today’s earthquake was the strongest in decades,” Vladimir Solodov, the governor of Kamchatka, said in a video message.
According to Russian authorities, the 3-4 meter waves damaged several coastal buildings, including kindergartens, residential buildings and shops. Fortunately, there were no reports of fatalities, but several injuries and significant property damage were reported from the region.
Tsunami also swept along the coast of Japan
After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency immediately issued an alert and called for urgent evacuations. The island of Hokkaido was at greatest risk, where residents were sent to rooftops and higher ground.
“We are expecting waves of up to 3 meters. We ask everyone to leave low-lying areas immediately!” the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Several fishing boats and smaller craft returned to port in time, but reports of boats being washed away and vehicles submerged in water were still coming in many places.

Hawaii and the US West Coast: “Act Now!”
In a dramatic video message, Hawaii Governor Josh Green urged people:
“This is clear – people need to leave the danger zone. The tsunami is on its way.”
The Honolulu Disaster Management Office also warned the public: “Don’t wait! A devastating tsunami is approaching. Act now!”
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, strong waves are expected in Hawaii, Chile, the Solomon Islands and several Pacific islands, while smaller but dangerous tidal waves are possible on the US West Coast – California, Oregon and Washington state.
Sakhalin Damage and Heroic Rescues
In Russia’s Sakhalin region, especially in the city of Severo-Kurilsk, the port was partially flooded. An entire floor of a fish farm was submerged, but fortunately the workers left the building in time.
According to the Russian emergency services, alarm systems were activated in many places before the earthquake, so many lives were saved, but the damage assessment is still ongoing.
It’s not over yet: aftershocks and warnings
Geologists say that aftershocks can last for several days after an earthquake of this magnitude, so the authorities are still on standby.
It could be life-threatening for people living in the region to return to flooded or damaged areas, so everyone is asked to wait for official permission from the authorities.
