— Roma, my dear Roma, we have twins! — Tania’s voice rang out over the phone, filled with joy and excitement. — They’re so tiny, just 2.5 kilos each, but healthy, can you believe it? Everything’s perfect!
— The ultrasound did say it was twins… — Roma muttered, as if the news wasn’t a surprise to him. — Boys?
— Yes, boys! They’re absolutely adorable! — tears of happiness streamed down the young mother’s cheeks. At last, she was holding her babies in her arms…
Tania’s pregnancy had been challenging. From the start, the father, Roma, wasn’t thrilled by the news. They worked together: Tania as an accountant, Roma as a driver at a small company.
They weren’t passionate lovers, just two people who often crossed paths, and eventually, a relationship formed.
Roma was still reeling from a breakup — his wedding with Lidia had been scheduled, but betrayal destroyed their future. He saw with his own eyes his fiancée kissing his friend, and the wedding was called off.
Roma sought comfort, and found it beside Tania.
Tania had never been the center of male attention: her fiery red unruly hair, freckled cheeks, and tendency to be a bit heavy made her less popular.
Since childhood she struggled with weight, but cakes and chocolates often won the battle. Roma became her first serious boyfriend, and Tania plunged headfirst into love.
But while this meant a lot to her, for Roma things were different. He didn’t want to make their relationship public, waiting for Tania behind the office after work, avoiding crowded places.
Yet in a small town, secrets don’t stay hidden long. People started gossiping, and to spite his ex-fiancée, Roma openly declared his feelings for Tania.
The girl heard it, believed him, and naturally her heart softened.
Tania lived alone with her lonely aunt in a tiny apartment. They didn’t get along well, but the aunt tolerated her because Tania brought food from home and cooked.
When the aunt found the positive pregnancy test, she immediately went to investigate — to Roma’s mother. Upon learning of Tania’s pregnancy, Marta Olegovna was stunned.
— Son, so you actually have a fiancée! — she exclaimed in surprise.
— What fiancée?! — Roma frowned. — I’m seeing a girl, but nothing serious!
— And it doesn’t matter that she’s pregnant? — his mother’s tone was firm.
That’s how Roma found out he was going to be a father. He wasn’t ready, but there was no turning back: the wedding happened. More like a civil ceremony and a modest dinner at his parents’ house.

Tania was happy, not noticing her husband’s coldness or his sister’s suspicious glances. She believed he would love her one day, after all, they were a family now.
But Roma didn’t hide his indifference. He showed no tenderness, didn’t ask about his wife’s well-being, and wasn’t looking forward to the babies’ arrival.
He started staying late at work. Tania tried to ignore it, but one day everything changed.
At the store, a confident blonde approached her.
— Now I get Roma — Lidia sneered, giving Tania a sharp look. — No wonder he’s in no hurry to come home.
— What do you mean? — Tania tensed.
— He doesn’t want to be with you there. He doesn’t love you. You understand that, right?
Those words cut deeply into Tania’s heart. She wanted to reply, but suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach. She was rushed to the hospital.
A few days later, she gave birth.
— Roma, come see your sons — Tania asked quietly.
— We’ll see… — he mumbled and hung up.
After discharge, Tania returned to his parents’ home. Kirill and Efim were restless, kept her awake, demanded constant attention. His mother helped, but the husband… he kept his distance.
Then Tania overheard a conversation between Roma and his mother.
— I don’t care about them — he said coldly. — Tania wanted the kids, so let her deal with them.
She packed her things and decided to leave.
— Stay — Roma suddenly said. — I’ll go.
He left for Lidia’s place. But he soon realized he’d made a mistake.
Life with Lidia wasn’t what he expected. She didn’t cook or care for him, spent his money, and demanded more and more. And he thought more and more about Tania.
For the first time in a long while, he visited his parents’ house to see the kids. When he saw Tania — changed, more beautiful, smiling — something inside him stirred.
— You’ve changed — he whispered.
— Thank you — Tania replied, looking him straight in the eyes.
Roma started spending more time with the children. Every week he came home and stayed late. Lidia got upset, but he no longer cared.
— Maybe we should get a divorce? — Tania suggested once.
— Let’s not rush — he answered unexpectedly.
That night, he didn’t return to Lidia.
Soon after, she left for a week, and he packed his things and came back home.
— I knew you’d come back — Tania whispered, holding him close.
— I’m not going anywhere anymore — he promised.
Lidia, sitting at a seaside café, smirked looking at her diamond ring.
— Yes, Sasha, I’ll marry you — she said casually.
Love? It doesn’t always guarantee happiness. Sometimes it’s easier without it…
And Tania smiled, holding her husband’s hand.
She knew: love had ultimately won.
