Zoos typically display signs warning visitors not to get too close to the animals, yet Rick Swope, a truck driver, did not hesitate when a young chimpanzee’s life was at risk.
During a family outing, Swope and his relatives witnessed a fierce confrontation between two male chimpanzees.
Jo-Jo, one of the less aggressive chimps, tried to avoid the clash but tragically fell into a deep moat and began to drown.
Bystanders watched helplessly, uncertain of what was unfolding.
Without a second thought, Swope dove into the murky, muddy water, searching blindly for the struggling chimp.

At last, he managed to grasp Jo-Jo and pull him to safety, while the crowd looked on in stunned silence at the heroic rescue.
Jo-Jo was extremely weak but still alive, and seemed to gaze back at Swope with a look of gratitude.
Swope recalled, “When I looked into his eyes, it was like seeing a human expression pleading, ‘Someone please help me!’”
A zoo staff member shared that Jo-Jo’s life hadn’t been easy: he lost his mother at a young age, who was killed by poachers. This made the rescue all the more meaningful.
Rick Swope’s bravery and selflessness not only saved an animal’s life but deeply moved everyone who witnessed the event.
This story stands as a powerful example of what human compassion and courage can achieve.
