It’s hard to believe nearly 19 years have passed since the world lost one of its most beloved conservation heroes, Steve Irwin — the unforgettable Crocodile Hunter.
Steve’s boundless passion for wildlife transcended borders, introducing countless species to millions and inspiring a deep respect and affection for nature everywhere.
But perhaps his greatest legacy is the love for animals he passed down to his children, Bindi and Robert, who continue to carry his mission forward with unwavering dedication.
Steve’s life was tragically cut short in 2006 during filming at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. A stingray’s barb pierced his chest, causing a fatal injury.
Justin Lyon, a close friend and underwater cameraman who was with Steve at the time, shared a heartbreaking account of those final moments: “He was struggling to breathe.
Even if we’d gotten him to emergency care immediately, the damage to his heart was catastrophic.
As we sped back, I was yelling for someone to apply pressure to his wound, telling him, ‘Think of your kids, Steve, hang on.’ He looked at me calmly and said, ‘I’m dying.’ That was the last thing he said.”

Steve’s loss still echoes deeply, especially for his wife Terri Irwin and their children. Terri and Steve met in 1991, and their love story was as inspiring as his life’s work.
Steve once famously described their meeting as “love at first sight.” They shared 14 years of marriage filled with adventure, passion, and devotion to wildlife conservation.
Since Steve’s untimely passing, Terri has become the steadfast guardian of his legacy, pouring her heart into continuing their shared dream.
She’s been open about the deep void his absence has left. In a candid April 2025 interview with Stellar Magazine, Terri revealed she remains single and profoundly connected to Steve’s memory.
“I’m sure there are many wonderful people in the world, but I found my happily ever after with Steve, and I still carry so much love for him.”
She added with grace, “I’m lonely for Steve, but I’m not lonely. I don’t mourn being on my own or not being in a relationship.
Women are amazing, fulfilled, incredible—whether they marry, have children, or not. There are no rules.”
Rumors once swirled that Terri was romantically linked to actor Russell Crowe.
However, she dismissed these claims, describing Crowe as a loyal family friend who stood by them during difficult times.
“Russell and Steve became close friends years ago, and after Steve passed, you realize who your true friends are. Russell has been a wonderful, loyal friend,” Terri told *Access Hollywood*.
Steve Irwin’s spirit continues to live on through the work of his family and the countless people he inspired.
His fearless dedication to wildlife and infectious enthusiasm left an indelible mark on the world — a legacy that will never fade.
