Rebeka, a lively and inquisitive five-year-old girl, nearly lost her life due to something that appeared to be a harmless toy.
In a quiet moment, driven by childlike curiosity, she swallowed 14 small, colorful magnetic beads — shiny but extremely dangerous when they connect inside the body.
Her mother first noticed that Rebeka suddenly vomited during lunch.
“I thought it was just a virus,” she recalled. But within a few hours, the girl’s condition worsened — her abdomen became swollen, she curled up crying in pain, and panic set in.
They rushed her to the hospital, unaware that every passing minute could mean the difference between life and death.
An emergency X-ray revealed a shocking sight: fourteen magnetic beads tightly clumped together in Rebeka’s intestines, like an invisible trap.
They were not scattered but attracted each other through the intestinal walls, compressing and cutting off blood flow to the tissues.
“Another hour’s delay could have been fatal,” said pediatric surgeon Dr. Marton Bálint.
Doctors immediately began a risky two-hour surgery to remove the magnets.
Sections of the small and large intestines were so severely damaged that they had to be removed to save Rebeka’s life.
After the operation, Rebeka required tube feeding and faced a long recovery process — both physically and emotionally.
“Her smile remains, but there’s something missing from her eyes,” her mother said tearfully.

Medical experts have long warned about the hidden dangers of powerful magnetic toys.
A single bead is usually harmless — but multiple magnets inside the body act like an internal trap, passing through intestinal loops and causing tissue death, and in severe cases, life-threatening perforations.
The situation is worsened by the fact that symptoms — vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain — often appear too late.
The risk is further increased by social media challenges. More children are ending up in hospitals after attempting the “magnetic tongue piercing” seen on TikTok or Instagram.
Two magnets — one above and one below the tongue — look impressive until an accidental swallowing turns tragic.
Rebeka’s story is a serious warning. Her mother now urges other families:
“Don’t think it can’t happen to you — we thought the same. It takes just one moment, one curious child… and your whole world changes.”
Some important safety tips for parents:
Never leave small, strong magnets within reach of young children.
Avoid magnetic toys without clear age recommendations or from unknown sources.
Monitor what your children watch online — some trends carry real dangers.
At the first signs of vomiting, swelling, or abdominal pain, seek medical help immediately.
