The train, the airplane, the promise of a new life far from home – all transformed in a single instant into a tragedy for a family seeking a brighter future away from their homeland.
Dr. Pratik Joshi and his wife, Dr. Komi Vyas, along with their three children, were embarking on a fresh start in London when fate cruelly intervened against them.
The last memory they carried with them was a joyful group selfie – a photograph
showing the family standing side by side, filled with hope and anticipation, which has now become a poignant symbol of lost dreams and life’s fragility.
Dr. Joshi and his family hailed from western India, from the picturesque Rajasthan region.
He worked as a radiologist in London, having moved years earlier to secure better opportunities for his loved ones.
His wife, Dr. Komi Vyas, was a physician at Pacific Hospital in Udaipur and, after careful consideration, chose to resign from her position to join her husband.
The twins, Nakul and Pradyut, who had just turned five, along with eight-year-old Miraya, were eagerly preparing to leave their familiar home
and step into an unknown yet hopeful future.
Air India flight 171, a state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad airport on June 12, 2025, at 1:38 PM.
Its destination was Gatwick, one of London’s busiest airports. Yet the short flight after takeoff would end in disaster.

The plane remained airborne for just 30 seconds before losing control and beginning to plummet.
The horrific crash claimed the lives of 242 people aboard and caused severe damage on the ground.
The aircraft collided with a medical team, where at least 28 people – including healthcare workers and medical students – lost their lives, and approximately 60 others were seriously injured.
The family’s story is especially heart-wrenching because their entire life carried the promise of a new beginning.
Dr. Joshi, already established in London, had been eagerly awaiting the reunion with his loved ones. Dr. Komi had quit her job just days before the trip to start their life together.
The children were excited about attending new schools, making new friends, and discovering a completely new world.
The happy family selfie taken shortly before departure has become an eternal memory.
A moment when everything was still fine, when the future seemed bright, and they believed all things were possible.
However, the plane’s technical malfunction and subsequent crash destroyed everything in an instant.
The black box was quickly recovered, and the investigation began, but nothing can bring back the lost lives.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken us all.
The entire nation shares its sorrow with the families who lost their loved ones.”
The British government also expressed condolences, as the sole survivor was a British citizen and several British families mourned losses.
The Tata Group and Air India are providing financial support to the affected, trying to ease the pain and grief.
On that day, the world paused when a smile vanished forever. A family full of hope set out to find a new home but never reached the dream they sought.
The final photo – a joyful, smiling selfie – reminds us how fragile life is and how swiftly everything can change.
Hope, longing, and dreams can all disappear in a single moment.
The story of Dr. Joshi, Dr. Vyas, and their children speaks of courage and the desire for a fresh start, but sadly also of a cruel twist of fate that deeply shook many.
This tragedy teaches us to cherish every moment, the time spent together, and life’s small joys.
The family’s smile is no longer only a sign of happiness but also a monument of mourning and loss – a painful yet vital message for all humanity.
