For an entire week, Hungary’s roads will be under the vigilant watch of police officers determined to tackle one of the most dangerous threats behind the wheel: driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
This operation isn’t just routine—it’s a high-stakes mission to protect lives and prevent devastating accidents caused by impaired drivers.
From June 16 through June 22, across every highway, backroad, and city street, officers will conduct intense, widespread inspections as part of the European Roadpol initiative.
This coordinated effort spans the continent, but here in Hungary, it takes on a special urgency, confronting a problem that silently but steadily endangers families and communities alike.
The crescendo of this campaign will come on the night of June 20, starting at 8 PM, when the police launch the “Alcohol and Drug Marathon”—a relentless 24-hour crackdown where no driver escapes scrutiny.
Under the cloak of darkness and into the early hours, breathalyzers and drug tests will be deployed relentlessly, turning highways and streets into checkpoints of accountability.
Just days earlier, on June 10, Budapest felt the firm hand of law enforcement when police set up rigorous spot checks across seven districts—X, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, and XXIII.
Over 2,200 drivers were stopped and tested in that sweep alone. Though only 15 drivers tested positive for intoxication—just 0.67%—each case tells a story of danger narrowly averted.

Every one of those drivers could have been the catalyst for a tragic accident; instead, their detection meant potential heartbreak was avoided.
This week-long operation sends a clear and urgent message: impaired driving is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode on our streets.
Even a single careless decision behind the wheel can shatter lives, tear families apart, and leave scars on communities that last forever.
Authorities are not just enforcing rules—they are fighting to preserve the fragile thread that connects us all: life itself.
The stark numbers remind us of the preciousness of every journey, urging every driver to be responsible, vigilant, and fearless in saying no to driving under the influence.
Because at the end of the day, no matter where you’re headed, arriving safely is what truly matters.
And thanks to these tireless efforts, Hungarian roads are a little safer, and countless lives stand a chance to be lived fully, unbroken, and whole.
