My Husband Said Mom Decided You Will Live In The Kitchen Until My Sister Gives Birth But I Showed Him The Apartment Contract

Eight years earlier, when I first walked through the entrance of that old red-brick building where I would later spend so much of my life, I looked at that place in a completely different way.

At that time, I believed that a home was not created only by walls and furniture, but also by the people who lived inside it, the people who stood beside us every day, and those who truly cared about whether we felt comfortable and safe.

However, a few years later, I had to realize that even inside a home that belonged to us, we could still feel like temporary guests.

This feeling becomes especially painful when the people who take away our sense of security are the very ones who should be supporting and protecting us.

That evening, when I came home from work, I had no idea what was waiting for me behind the door. In my hand, I carried a simple cloth bag with some basic groceries because I had stopped at the store on my way home to buy bread,

milk, and a few small things. I was tired, carrying the weight of an entire day of work on my shoulders, but I still felt a quiet happiness when I imagined finally entering the silence of my own apartment.

However, when I opened the door, for the first moment I thought I had arrived at the wrong apartment.

Instead of the familiar order, there were unfamiliar bags lined up in the hallway, large boxes placed against the wall, and a colorful blanket lying on the chair that I had previously seen only in a few pictures on Rita’s social media.

The apartment that I had chosen myself, the one I had worked for years to afford, and the one where every small detail carried memories, suddenly looked as if it had become a temporary stop for someone else’s life.

I had not even completely taken off my coat when I heard Elvira’s voice coming from the bedroom. Her voice was calm, confident, and so natural that it sounded as if she had always been the person deciding how this household should function.

– Put the pillow over there because she will be more comfortable there. Rita, you should sleep closer to the window because you need fresh air.

I slowly walked toward the bedroom, and when I stepped through the doorway, I simply stood there silently for a few seconds. Not because I had nothing to say, but because too many things had happened at once for me to understand everything immediately.

My own clothes were lying neatly folded on a chair. My favorite home sweater was there, my nightgown, the book I read before going to sleep every evening, my hand cream, and my phone charger.

All my belongings were there, yet somehow I felt as if someone had quietly erased me from my own life.

The double bed already had new sheets stretched across it, pink-colored with tiny patterns, something that had nothing to do with me. Rita was sitting on the edge of the bed, supporting her stomach with one hand while gently touching the blanket with the other,

while she looked at the wardrobe with a gaze that suggested she was already planning which shelves would hold her own clothes and the baby’s belongings.

My husband, Stanislav, was standing beside the window with his hands in his pockets. His face was completely calm, almost indifferent.

He looked at me with the expression of someone preparing to discuss something completely ordinary, not someone who was about to tell his wife that another person would take her bedroom while she moved to sleep in the kitchen.

– My mother thinks you could sleep in the kitchen for a while, until my sister gives birth to the baby – he said in a simple tone. – It is only a temporary solution, you do not need to make it into a tragedy.

For several long seconds, I only looked at him. I could not understand how someone could remain so calm in a situation that felt completely humiliating to me.

What hurt me the most was not that they wanted to help Rita. It was not that a pregnant woman might need support and care.

What hurt me was that nobody had asked me even for a single moment what I thought about it.

– Who exactly decided that I would move from my own bedroom to the kitchen? – I finally asked quietly.

Elvira immediately turned toward me. There was an expression on her face as if I had been the one behaving rudely.

– Do not start this, Nadja. Rita is going through a very sensitive period right now. She cannot be stressed. You work all day anyway, it does not matter where you sleep for a few weeks.

A few weeks.

Those two words always leave people’s mouths so easily when they are not the ones who have to endure the consequences. It is always simple to say something is only temporary when you are not the one giving up your comfort or security.

I felt the old emotions rising inside me again. That familiar pressure that had made me stay silent for years instead of arguing. I did not want a scene.

I did not want Stanislav to say again that I was too sensitive. I did not want to listen to Elvira’s long sighs and those sentences that always suggested I was selfish whenever I finally stood up for myself.

I took off my coat, carefully hung it on the hallway hook, and then returned to the bedroom. I tried to remain calm because I knew every word I said now mattered.

– Rita, how long are you planning to stay here? – I asked.

Her expression immediately changed. Since childhood, she had known how to make that particular face, the one that made her appear hurt and helpless before anyone had even refused her anything.

– I did not come here because I wanted to – she said softly. – You can see what kind of situation I am in. I had a fight with Slavka, and I cannot go home right now. I need peace.

I looked at the bed where I would have been sleeping only moments earlier, then looked back at her.

– And for that, you need to take my room?

Rita’s expression instantly hardened.

– Then where do you think I should go? To the kitchen? You know yourself that a pregnant woman needs proper sleep.

Stanislav stepped between us.

– Do not get stuck on every single word. Family helps each other. That is completely normal.

I looked at him for a long time. Almost with curiosity, I watched the man with whom I had shared my life for years. The man standing in front of me was talking about my apartment as if it were a shared place where other people could freely make decisions.

But this apartment was not a gift.

It was not a family inheritance.

It was not a property we had bought together.

This was the place I had worked for years to own, while waking up for early shifts as a bakery technologist and saving a portion of every salary I received.

For years, I collected the money that allowed me to make the first payment. Later, I sold the small room I had inherited from my aunt, which was tiny and worn down, but for me it represented an important step toward building a life of my own.

When I first entered this two-room apartment located in the old brick building, I was greeted by empty walls and dusty floors. The place was not perfect, but even then, I could already see it becoming my home.

I remember the day after the purchase agreement was signed, when I sat alone on the kitchen windowsill. The rooms still smelled of plaster and fresh paint, every sound echoed through the emptiness, but I cried.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was relieved.

Because finally, I had a place where nobody could tell me where I belonged.

Or at least, that was what I believed at the time.
