On March 21st, a remarkable event unfolded once again in the serene heart of the Danube Bend: Szofi, the venerable female stork, made her return for the eighth consecutive year to her steadfast partner Macus.
Macus, grounded by injury yet unwavering in spirit, has waited patiently and faithfully for her, his hope never fading despite his inability to take flight.
Their extraordinary journey began back in 2016, when a severely wounded white stork—shot and unable to fly—was rescued and brought to the Dömös Bird and Nature Rescue Center.
Named Macus by the center’s dedicated leader, András Márton, the bird faced a life confined to the ground. Yet, despite this cruel fate, Macus was granted a second chance at happiness.
In the spring of 2017, András built a sturdy nesting platform in Macus’s garden, silently wishing for a mate to arrive.
Nature answered that call in April, when Szofi, a vibrant and healthy young female, appeared and immediately formed a bond with Macus.
Every spring since, she has bravely journeyed thousands of miles from Africa, overcoming perils like poachers, tangled power lines, and wild predators, returning to Macus without fail.
This year marked Szofi’s eighth astonishing migration—a testament not only to nature’s resilience but to an extraordinary love story that defies the odds. It is a tale of loyalty, hope, and the miracle of connection.
András shared on the rescue center’s social media that this year, Szofi and Macus will nest together for the ninth time, raising their chicks despite Szofi’s growing age and fatigue.
