The dog sat by the manhole cover day after day… and what they finally found under the cover took everyone’s breath away!

An unbearable pain coursed through his entire body. The dog could not stand, but it was not only the physical pain that tormented him. Most of all, he feared that he had let down the only person who cared for him. The car hit him, causing his jaw to open, and now he could not meet the expectations of his caregiver.

The dog closed his eyes and remembered how it all began. In a small Hungarian town, where the streets smelled of fresh bread and blooming linden trees, the door of a butcher’s shop creaked. A young woman, Gabriella, stepped out, and with her the smell of fresh lamb escaped into the street.

A stray dog sitting on a nearby bench, who had been starving for days, turned its nose up at the smell and whined softly. That morning, a little boy threw him a piece of bread at the market, but it was not enough. As she passed the shop, the dog stopped and looked longingly in the window.

Gabriella, a young woman with kind eyes, was buying lamb for her stew. As she left the shop, she noticed the dog’s hungry gaze. The dog’s fur was shaggy and his ribs were visible under his skin. At first, Gabriella wanted to walk past him, but the dog’s low, barely audible whine stopped her.

There was so much longing in that sound that her heart trembled. Without thinking, she went back into the shop. Through the window, the dog, his tongue lolling, watched as Gabriella showed the butcher a large bone with pieces of meat still on it.

The bone was perfect. The dog closed his eyes and imagined gnawing on it. He was so lost in his reverie that he didn’t notice when the door opened again. The same bone was in front of her nose, and Gabriella stood behind her, patiently holding the treat.

– “Take it, don’t be afraid,” Gabriella said softly.

The dog backed away, unable to believe his luck. He looked at the woman in disbelief, but hunger won out. He grabbed the bone, bit into it greedily, and his tail spun like a propeller. Gabriella smiled and continued on her way, not even suspecting that their paths would cross again. The city was large, a labyrinth of streets and courtyards. But she was wrong…

The next day Gabriella saw the dog again. He looked like a German shepherd, but his fur was unkempt, and he had a stray dog tag in his ear. Something in his gaze – loyal and slightly remorseful – told her that this was the same dog.

They were far from the butcher shop, in another part of town. Had the dog found her by smell? Gabriella looked around hesitantly.

The dog looked at her hopefully, and the woman could not resist. Soon she bought him pieces of meat at the market. The dog ate heartily, and Gabriella hurried away.

She did not want the dog to get used to her. It would have been crazy to take a stray dog home — she already had a hamster that she adored. But the next morning the dog was waiting for her on the road again.

Buying treats for the third time, Gabriella realized that this could not go on like this. Meat was not cheap, especially in wartime, when prices rose.

She decided to cook porridge for the dog with pieces of meat.

The dog waited for Gabriella in the same place every morning.   He sat under the old chestnut tree, as if guarding the sacred place where he first received love. 

“So you are here again?” Gabriella smiled, holding a plastic box in her hand. – “If you keep this up, I’ll even give you a name.”

The dog wagged its tail. Gabriella sat down next to it and put the box down. The dog waited patiently for her to open it.

– “Let’s see… porridge, a little boiled liver, and a little chicken skin. You know, this chicken skin isn’t exactly diet-friendly, but you deserve it.”

The dog started eating greedily but cautiously.

– “You can be happy with a little something…” – Gabriella muttered, then sighed. – “If only my boss were this grateful.”

The dog raised his head as if he understood. Gabriella smiled.

– “Okay. Let’s name it. Hmm… let it be Zorro. Because you’re so mysterious.”

Zorro. The name suited her perfectly. 

From that day on, Gabriella went out to her every morning.  The dog didn’t try to follow her, but she was always there.  After a while, people even talked about them in the housing estate: “That brown-haired girl and her dog.” 

– “Not my dog,” Gabriella always said, but she was no longer convinced. 

One evening, Gabriella stayed with her for a longer time. 

– “Zorró, I guess you don’t just come here for the leftovers anymore, do you?”

The dog put its head on Gabriella’s knee. 

– “Okay, Zorró. Now I’m officially… taking you home.”

Zorró didn’t move. He just looked at Gabriella. 

– “Yes, I really said I would take you home. But I also have a hamster living with me. His name is Bruno. He’s a bit jealous.”

The dog licked Gabriella’s hand. 

– “That’s right. A deal is made.”

This is how the new life began. At first, Zorro only had a temporary place in Gabriella’s small apartment.  He was given a blanket, water, and Bruno’s shocked looks. 

– “Don’t look like that, Bruno. He won’t eat your sunflower seeds.”

But Bruno wasn’t convinced. 

Gabriella went to work in the morning, and Zorro lay in front of the front door until she returned. 

– “They’re going to fire me one day because I’m always rushing home to see you,” Gabriella sighed one day. – “But I don’t mind.”

Her girlfriend, Eszter, had been trying to drag her away for months. 

– “You and this dog! Seriously, you don’t even have Tinder on your phone!”

– “At least Zorro isn’t lying about his height.”

– “And about whether he has a job?”

– “Exactly.”

They laughed. For the first time in a long time, Gabriella felt like someone was really waiting for her at home. 

Then the stormy day came. 

The weather forecast said rain, but no one expected the strong winds. Gabriella set off to the vet with Brúno, who had been depressed for days. 

– “Stay home, Zorro. This will be a quick trip.”

Zorro didn’t listen.  Halfway down the road, Gabriella turned around and saw the dog behind her.

– “You always have to follow me, don’t you?”

The wind picked up. Gabriella’s scarf was blown away by a gust of wind.

– “This is not a game!” – she shouted.

That’s when it happened. The hamster she was carrying in her coat pocket got free and jumped to the ground.

– “BRUNO!!!”

The pet ran towards a canal. Gabriella started after it, but she wasn’t fast enough.

– “NO!”

Zorro ran forward. The dog jumped into the water, where Bruno disappeared. Gabriella knelt down on the edge of the sidewalk, sobbing.

– “Zorro, no! Don’t go in!”

But Zorro was already in the water.

The next moment, a painful whimper was heard. The dog was hit by a car while trying to return to Gabriella. 

– “ZORRO!”

The body lay motionless on the side of the road.  Gabriella ran over. Her hands trembled as she reached for the dog’s fur. 

– “Stay with me… please…”

The rain was pouring. Gabriella knelt on the side of the road, Zorro’s heavy body in her arms. 

– “Zorro, please… don’t do this. Don’t leave me…”

The dog whimpered. His eyes were open, but blurry. 

– “I’m here. I’m here with you. You can’t leave…”

An elderly man stopped beside them, an umbrella in his hand. 

– “Ma’am, should I call a vet? There’s a clinic around the corner.”

– “Yes! Yes, please… right now!” Gabriella shouted.

The man took out his phone. Gabriella leaned close to the dog’s ear. 

– “Hold on, okay? They’ll help you right away.”

Zorro tried to move, but he could only follow the sound with his eyes. 

– “You saved Bruno… you saved me too.”

A few minutes later, a white station wagon arrived, with the words “City Veterinary Clinic – 0-24” on the side.  Two young women got out, one of them quickly bent down to Zorro. 

– “Injury to the hip… possible internal bleeding… let’s take him in!”

Gabriella wouldn’t let them take him without her.  She held Zorro’s paw all the way in the car, while the vet assistant connected an IV. 

– “Hold on, my warrior…” she whispered over and over.

Two days had passed.

Gabriella was sitting in the waiting room of the clinic, wearing the same sweater she had arrived in. Bruno was sleeping in his carrier. The assistants already knew him by name.

– “Gabriella, you can go in now. Zorro is stable.”

Gabriella almost ran into the operating room. Zorro was lying on a mattress, his hind legs in splints. His head slowly turned towards Gabriella.

– “Zorro…”

The dog’s tail trembled weakly. Gabriella sank to her knees beside the bed.

– “I knew you wouldn’t give up.”

The vet entered behind them.

– “He’s incredibly lucky. The car hit his internal organs. His femur is broken, but we can operate on him.”

– “Do everything. At any cost.”

– “We expected this answer.”

In two weeks…

Zorró todaynko walked beside Gabriella. The dog, like a proud little warrior, swayed, but with every step he proved: he wanted to live. 

– “You’ll get better, you know that?” – Gabriella asked. – “And when you’re on your feet… we’ll go to the hills.”

Zorró stopped and looked at Gabriella. 

– “You know, sometimes I think you’re not even a dog, but someone I got back.”

An old lady walked by them and commented:

– “It’s a wonder that a dog like that still exists. A rare treasure.”

– “I know.” – Gabriella replied with a smile.

A few months later…

Gabriella was holding a book in her hand: Zorró’s Story – A Stray Dog Who Brought Back Faith. 

– “Who would have thought that I would write about you?” – he laughed, while Zorro panted in his lap. 

– “And that readers will write letters, that they too have been given a second chance by you…”

The dog was dreaming.  Maybe about the old chestnut tree, maybe about the canal bank, or just about Gabriella’s laughter. 

– “You know, Zorro…” – Gabriella said softly, stroking him – “Sometimes animals know what we need… before we even realize it.”
