The cold wind blew through the deserted streets of Sosnovca, driving snow into the cracks of the old houses. Ian Gordeev, a former convict, walked along the river, wrapped in his thin, torn coat.
He had returned here after fifteen years in prison, determined to start over. But the villagers still looked at him askance—old grievances and rumors about his past still hung in the air.
He walked slowly, his head bowed, when suddenly he heard a scream. A short, desperate scream. He lifted his head and saw a woman struggling in the icy black river. The thin ice cracked beneath her, and though she tried to struggle, her heavy clothes and the cold dragged her down.
Without thinking, Ian began to run. He threw his coat on the bank and plunged into the biting water. The ice almost cut through her skin, but it reached the woman. The woman was crying and screaming, one hand on her belly – she was pregnant.
“Get me!” Ian shouted, and with all his strength he pulled the woman to the shore. Finally he managed to pull her out of the water, and they both fell shivering onto the snow.
A villager who heard the noise ran over and quickly took them to a nearby house. The doctor was also immediately called. Ian sat in a chair in the corner of the room all night, wet and frozen, watching the doctor work on the woman.
The next morning the whole village whispered in shock.
The news spread like wildfire: “Ian Gordeev saved Maria Pâslari’s life! And he almost froze to death in the process!”
The old people, who had avoided him so far, now looked at him differently. Some nodded, whispering softly, “Maybe he really has changed…”

When Ian stepped out into the street in the dry clothes the priest had lent him, people stopped and stared at him. Ian shivered—but not from the cold this time. He saw no hatred in the eyes, but admiration… and gratitude.
Maria came out too—she was pale, but smiling—and walked slowly over to Ian, placing one hand on her growing belly.
“Thank you,” she said quietly but clearly. “You saved my life. And my child’s life.”
Ian hung his head in embarrassment. He didn’t know what to say. He had spent his entire life avoiding people’s gaze, and now everyone was looking at him differently.
That day, the mayor came to him with an offer:
“Come work for us, Ian. We need honest people. And you… you showed that you deserve a second chance.”
Ian could hardly believe it. After so many years of mistakes and sorrow, someone had finally reached out to him.
He looked at Maria, then at the villagers, who were waiting for his answer with hope. And then, for the first time in many years, Ian smiled.
“Yes,” he said. “I want to start over.”
And so, under the gray sky, in the biting wind, in the small village of Sosnovca, the story of a new life began – a story of a fallen man finding his place among people again.
